Keith Brown

Keith Brown is one of Jamaica’s most experienced Public Relations practitioners, having been in the field for over 40 years. He was a corporate Public Relations manager for 22 years and currently heads his own PR company. Brown is the founding president of the Public Relations’ Society of Jamaica and the first Jamaican practitioner to be accepted as a member of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). He is also a broadcaster and successful entertainment impresario.

Courses Taught

Advanced Public Relations

The aim of the course is to enable students to understand advanced concepts of public relations, identify, analyze and solve public relations issues and problems and develop their management and analytical skills. The course also provides participants with an opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of the skills, techniques, and knowledge acquired in the introductory course. Areas covered include but are not limited to The Context of Public Relations, Research and Evaluation, Corporate Communication, PR and New Technology, Public Relations and links to other functions, Public Affairs and Issues Management, Public Relations, Politics and the Media, Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility, Reputation Management, Crisis Management, Public Sector Public Relations.


Introduction to Public Relations

Gain an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of public relations practitioners. Topics covered include: PR history, terminology and techniques; PR programmes and their components; PR and communication as a profession; the impact of technology; PR in the advertising and marketing mix; event planning; writing principles; writing for newspapers, magazines and the internet; and identifying feature opportunities. This course uses case studies throughout and is offered in three modules. As a final project, students will prepare a PR plan that combines the areas discussed in each module.
